Road Trip Trail Mix

It’s summer road trip time!  That means something entirely different today than it did 2 years ago.  Now that we have a toddler riding in the back seat,we have a whole new approach to road trips.  The car is loaded with silly music, lots of books, we’re even going to give crayons a try.  I’ve mapped all the rest stops along the highways for our 7-hour road trip.  I have all of Ava’s meals planned for the day, and hopefully we will make it there without everyone in the car screaming and crying.

Part of the fun of road trips is stopping at little hole-in-the-wall gas stations along little country roads to pick up some snacks, but these days I’m just not feeling that.  Plus if Ava is asleep we will NOT be stopping!  So I mixed up some trail mix for Chad and I to munch on during our drive.

Trail Mix

  • 1/2 cup Walnut halves
  • 1/2 cup Peanuts (I went for the dry roasted…they were on sale)
  • 1/2 cup Pumpkin Seeds
  • 1/4 cup Dried Cranberries
  • 1/4 cup Chocolate Chips or Chocolate Candies
  • 1/4 cup Yogurt Covered Raisins

Simply measure and stir together the 1/2 cup walnuts…

the 1/2 cup peanuts…

the 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds…

the 1/4 cup dried cranberries…

You can STOP here IF you have your healthy pants on! But, hey, I’m resisting the urge to stop at a gas station and eat nonsense from a weird bag so I’m adding a few more goodies!

Alright, M&M’s and yogurt covered raisins seriously up the sugar content but it’s MUCH better than eating weird orange colored “cheese” crackers from the snack aisle.

I mixed it up and tossed it into a zip top bag so this trail mix can be easily tossed from the front seat to the back seat.

Enjoy and Happy Trails!

P.S. I couldn’t resist adding a few pictures of my little helper.  Ava was fascinated with the cooler and played with it while I made the trail mix.

  4. Yum – we have survived many a family trip with homemade trail mix. My kids always wanted peanut M&M in there too. Great photos – adorable daughter.

  5. No healthy pants allowed on vacation! This snack looks FABBO! Totally going to have to make this for our summer vaca. Hmm, now how to keep my kids from picking out the sweets only. Lil’ stinkers! :)
